"You mean you can cruise free and get paid too?"<br /><br />"Yes way," I said, adopting my granddaughter's phrase, "you sure can."<br /><br />Alex was skeptical but after he read my article about working on a cruise ship and the fabulous perks that come with the job. Alex checked into it, using some of my suggestions, and during summer break from the University, he worked on a cruise ship sailing the Inward Passage in Alaska.<br /><br />I got a post card from him mailed from <em>Juaneu</em>. The writing side was covered with Xs and Os--with just Thanks, Alex. His mother showed me pictures from his cell phone and I could see he was having a blast.<br /><br />When he came home at the end of the summer, he came to the house and told me about his adventures and what he loved most about working on one of the finest of the cruise ships doing the Alaskan summer sailings.<br /><br />He grinned, as he mentioned the partying among the crew members. Oh and yes, he did meet a young lady who was a tour escort for one of the shore excursions. Whenever he was in that port, they had a date. He thinks it might lead to something but not sure. She is a student at a College in CA. They have both signed on to go back on the summer cruises next year.<br /><br />Alex was hired to work in one of the casinos as a dealer. He said the training was really easy and the hours working were minimal. He had lots of time off to enjoy the cruise and of course when the ship was in port, the casino was closed so he went on some of the shore tours. <br /><br />I looked at the pictures he took, listened to his stories of interesting towns he visited like Skagway and Misty Fjords. The port he most enjoyed was Sitka, a Russian style fishing village filled with beautiful art work and gold and silver icons at St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral.<br /><br />Alex thanked me again and again for telling him about working on a cruise ship. His mother thanked me for telling him because not only did he get paid but was able to save his money. One of the girl's mentioned she longed to take a Caribbean Cruise. Mary Ellen told her that her parents raved about the cruise they had taken for their 45th wedding anniversary.<br /><br />She remembered her mother had met a woman on board who was cruising free because she got a group together from her retirement community. The woman told her she only needed 15 people to go as a group and she could go free.<br /><br />The idea was planted in Mary Ellen's mind. She went to her parent's travel agent, got information about the cruise, and took it to the next book club meeting. Six months later, Mary Ellen, her husband, the book group and their husbands, plus assorted friends who signed up to go, were cruising out of Miami to exciting ports in the Caribbean.<br /><br />Mary Ellen took a copy of Michner's book with her on the cruise. This time it was, "South Pacific". She wanted to get some ideas for her next FREE cruise.<br /><br />Bob R was a retired utilities worker, an active member of the local union and the American Legion. Many other union members were in the Legion and Bob enjoyed being with them and Alex, his best buddy for years. It was after Alex's untimely death that Bob took stock.<br /><br />Thinking about Alex, and some of the things Alex had talked about doing some day, Bob thought of things in life he wanted to do. He made a list. At the top of the list was to visit Australia. Bob's father had talked about his time in Australia returning from the war.<br /><br />When another buddy from the Legion passed away unexpectedly, Bob went to see a travel agent and was discouraged. There was no way he could afford to make such an expensive trip.<br /><br />Searching the Internet, he found tour companies doing group tours. On<br />their web pages he learned that group travel was cheaper and group leaders traveled FREE.<br /><br />He got all the details; found out how many he needed to go free, began his campaign, and 14 months later, Bob, some of his Legion buddies, a few friends from church and his family went to Australia.
